The main beach resort area in Krabi with a wide sandy beach and sea view restaurants. It’s developed a lot over the last ten years, with more and more of a western influence – yes, the King and Clown are here. But if you’re looking for a convenient beach stay with access to other islands, Ao Nang ticks the box.

FOOD & DRINK
You’ll find a mix of cheap and cheerful places serving international and Thai food. Prices drop as you move away from the beach and those gorgeous sunsets. The Longboat restaurant enjoys a prime sunset spot on the edge of the main drag. Serving signature southern Thai spicy curries with a lot of seafood. A three course meal and soft drink will cost about £20.
If you’re looking for night life, there are plenty of bars, including a couple of streets packed with very cheap Patong style joints. You’ll also find places like the Reggae Bar which have live music and a more relaxed feel.
STAY
Glur Hostel is a proper flashpacking pad! There is a massive sitting area with kitchen (including free tea, coffee and biscuits), a massive TV and computer. The rooms are squeeky clean with lots of storage space and your own mirror. The best bit is the pool, which for most of my three night stay, I had all to myself. It’s only about a 20 minute walk to Ao Nang beach which is great if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle.
If you want a party hostel Slumber Party is your best bet.
TRAVEL & ISLAND ACCESS
- Fly into Krabi airport from anywhere in Thailand.
- Krabi Town is a characterless place with lots of grey concrete. The night market isn’t anything special either and it’s quite a while away from the coast.
- Buses from Krabi Town will take you round to the tranquil beaches of Khao Lak and the island of contrasts that is Phuket, the largest in Thailand.
- Take a bus and ferry to laid back Koh Lanta.
- Ferries direct from the beach in Ao Nang head to Phi Phi islands and Railey Beach.
