Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was one of the former kingdoms before Thailand became one country. Ayutthaya was a city of fabulous wealth with glittering golden temples, until much of it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. The capital relocated to now Bangkok and Ayutthaya was largely forgotten.

Today, you can explore Ayutthaya’s Historical Park which comprises of multiple temples, some of which have been partially restored.
Wat Phra Makthat
A Sandstone Buddha Head entwined in tree roots. This is one of the most photographed sites in the park
Wat Ratchaburana
The beautiful prang (Khmer style stupa) is covered with intricate patters.
Wat Phra Ram
Has one of the of the tallest prang in Ayuttaya.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
Three stupas. Were once covered in gold.

By bus, train or taxi from Bangkok
Ayutthaya is just north of Bangkok making Ayutthaya ideal for a day trip. Buses leave from Rangsit, Victory Monument and Mo Chit taking between 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Hualamphong, Bangkok’s main railway station has regular trains to the ruined city taking 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.
Chiang Mai to Ayutthaya
The railway connects Bangkok to Chiang Mai with multiple stops through the Thai countryside. Rather than breezing all the way to Bangkok, stop off in Ayutthaya for the sunrise. Read More Here
